A plant in Tuscaloosa owned by RadiciSpandex Corp., a maker of elastic fiber and yarn, is closing. Eighty-nine jobs will be impacted.

The Tuscaloosa News reported that RadiciSpandex did not give a reason for closing the plant in the notice it sent to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The layoffs are expected to begin Dec. 14.

The Gastonia, N.C.-based company manufactures elastic fiber and yarn used in swimsuits, lingerie, exercise apparel and other clothing and products. The company began operations in Tuscaloosa in 2001 after acquiring spandex maker Globe Manufacturing Corp., which had declared bankruptcy.
