A search was under way on Tuesday for Pierre Agnes, the CEO of Boardriders Inc., after his boat was found empty, washed up on a beach in south-west France.
According to Agence France-Press, Agnes, 54, went out in his boat early Tuesday morning and later told authorities that because of fog, he would return later than he’d initially planned.
Maritime authorities said two boats and three helicopters are involved in the search, according to the Los Angeles Times. Rough seas were reported in the area, though wind was light and visibility was clear.
In a statement, Boardriders, Quicksilver’s parent brand, said, “Early this morning our CEO, Pierre Agnes, did what he did many mornings and went fishing on his beloved boat to start his day. Later in the morning his boat was recovered on the beach near his hometown and Pierre has not been heard from since. The Boardriders family and entire surfing world are devastated by this news. Given the situation on the ground is still evolving, our statements today will be limited. We are concentrating on working with the local authorities on the search and rescue effort and supporting Pierre’s family. Please keep Pierre and his family in your prayers. Thank you.”
American surfer Kelly Slater on Instagram posted a picture of Agnes and stated, “kellyslaterI love this man. @pierre_agnes went missing in Hossegor today when his boat washed ashore in the cold, early morning fog. I’m praying for a miracle but it’s just starting to hit me what a profound effect this man had on my life and the surf community at large. He loved his morning fishing trips, family, @quiksilver, surfing, friends, motorbikes, Capbreton…I’m not even sure how to let it sink in. 😢”
Boardriders’ brands include Quiksilver, Roxy and DC Shoes.
In May 2015, Agnes was promoted to chief executive officer of Quiksilver, Inc. Agnes has worked for Quiksilver for 30 years at Quicksilver. In November 2014, he was promoted to president of Quiksilver, Inc. He previously served as global head of apparel for Quiksilver, Roxy and DC. Since 2005 Pierre served as president of Quiksilver Europe.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection months after Agnes took the helm, emerging in 2016. It changed its name to Boardriders last year, and weeks ago, it agreed to acquire Billabong.
