The National Basketball Association (NBA) is removing color restrictions on players’ sneakers for the first time in league history, according to ESPN.
Players may wear sneakers of any color at any point in the upcoming season. Third-party logos will still have to be pre-approved by the league office before players can wear them on the court. Restrictions will also be placed on “sharp protruding objects or reflective elements.”
Individual teams can also still impose their own rules regarding footwear and color policy outside of the league’s loosened stance.
The rule change is part of the league’s attempts to give players the additional freedom to express themselves on the court. The move comes alongside the recent surge in alternate uniforms for teams in the league as Nike has assumed the NBA license.
