A new mission-driven women’s activewear line has been launched by medical student Lizzie Cochran, funded Via Kickstarter. The brand, Epidemia Designs, focuses on a line of science-inspired designs made to encourage and support women and girls pursuing education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Each Epidemia fabric pattern is based on Cochran’s work studying tissue and cell samples. Noticing how beautiful the magnified images were, she got the idea to create the first line of clothing that celebrates the human body on a cellular level – and carries a message about women and science.
The new “She’s Got It” collection of leggings, sports bras and gym tops is created by digitally manipulating micrographs of human cells and muscle tissue, including heart tissue (She’s Got Heart), nerve synapses (She’s Got Nerve) and brain cells (She’s Got Brains).
The three patterns represent Epidemia’s mission to celebrate women and girls who want to work in the sciences. The company has partnered with Girlstart and has donated funds for STEM summer camp scholarships in 2016.
