Russell Corporation announced the 'phasing out' of its fabrics operation in Alexander City, AL, and the layoff of more than 250 employees due to the “current economic conditions, in addition to increasing costs and import pressures from Asia.”

“This decision is in no way a reflection of the hard work and dedication of these employees,” Russell fabrics general manager Jim Martin said in a statement. “We are faced with a very competitive marketplace under normal circumstances, and the worsening economic situation has made this difficult decision necessary.”

Martin added that the “total impact on employment is not known at this time, since the company will be working to pursue other employment opportunities within the organization.”

“Unfortunately, this decision reflects the continuing economic difficulties we are facing that have already caused us to announce the elimination of several thousand jobs in Central America,” said Rick Medlin, executive vice president, manufacturing. “We regret that these decisions become necessary and want to state the company’s commitment to provide whatever assistance we can during this transition.”
