As part of a settled lawsuit, Remington Arms Company will be replacing triggers on selected rifle models, including the Model 700 rifle.

The settlement, handed down in federal court in Missouri on Friday, stems from a lawsuit alleging that a Remington 700 rifle fired three times on its own, without having the trigger pulled, since the owner first purchased it in 2000. It argued that Remington was aware of the issue and knowingly sold a defective product.

In the settlement Remington denied the allegations that the firearm is defective and the defect was covered up.

Remington will be retrofitting an estimated 7.85 firearms.  Owners of the models can either take their firearms to a Remington Authorized Repair Center for the retrofit or ship them to the company.  Remington will supply pre-paid shipping tags, boxes and written instructions.  Owners must first submit a timely claim form to be eligible for the benefit.

The settlement covers certain models of firearms manufactured between 1948 and April of 2014.
