The Outdoor Industry Foundation is accepting nominations for the second class of Outdoor Idols. The award honors eight young outdoor athletes who excel in their respective sport(s), embrace the spirit of the active lifestyle, set trends for the next generation, and strive to grow participation in active outdoor sports by motivating others to get outside and become active. The awards will be presented at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, Salt Lake City, in January. The deadline for nominations is December 6, 2006.

OIF introduced the Outdoor Idols award in August 2006 at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, where the inaugural eight honorees were recognized for their achievements.

To nominate an individual, visit: www.outdooridols.org and click on “nominate an idol”. Outdoor Idols nominees must be:

  • Under the age of 23
  • Trendsetters in their respective sport(s)
  • Helping to grow participation in active outdoor recreation
  • Role models for the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts
  • Participants/leaders in any of the following sports: ice climbing, freeskiing, alpine skiing (ski racing), telemark skiing, mountaineering, expedition, backcountry, snowboarding, nordic skiing, kite skiing/boarding, ski basing, or winter sport/outdoor instruction

Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of outdoor journalists, industry leaders, youth development organizations and outdoor athletes.

“This award raises the visibility of these exceptional young athletes, as they work in their communities to teach others about the benefits of outdoor activities,” said Ali Steimke, outreach manager for OIF. “We are proud to recognize these individuals who inspire a new generation of outdoor recreation participants through their excellence in leadership and mentoring capabilities.”
