Pacific Sunwear of California reported that total PacSun sales for the fiscal month of January declined 8% to $54.7 million from $59.6 million in the year ago period. PacSun comp sales dropped 11% for the month.
Apparel comps were up 9% and accounted for 90% of total comp sales. Junior apparel comps were up 18%, driven by strong sales of Bullhead denim and tops. For young men, apparel comps were flat as strength in Bullhead denim was offset by weakness in tees and fleece. Non-apparel comps were down 66% and accounted for 10% of comp store sales. Transactions were up high teens, while the average sale per comp store was down mid-twenties.
PacSun reiterated its fiscal Q4 guidance of a net loss of 38 cents to 43 cents per diluted share, including an estimated gain of about 10 cents per diluted share from the sale of the companys Anaheim distribution center.
Zumiez, Inc. reported a 14.8% decline in same-store sale after a 1.7% increase for the same period a year ago. Management said the decline in comps was driven by a decrease in store transactions and a decrease in average unit retail. The companys total net sales for the five-week period ended Jan. 31 decreased 2% to 20.3 million compared to $20.7 million a year ago.
ZUMZ saw positive comps for footwear for the month followed by negative comps in mens and juniors apparel, accessories, hardgoods and boys apparel. Stores west of Texas and Florida, which comped down in high-teens, continued to post comp store losses below stores in the South, Midwest and Northeast.
Stores in the West and Florida make up about 58% of comp store sales.
The Buckle continued to exhibit strength amidst a downward-spiraling economy as comps increased 14.7% for fiscal January. Net sales for the month increased 23.1% to $48 million compared to $39 million in the year ago period. Mens sales, which represented 40.5% of total sales, were up 11.5% from the same period last year. Womens sales, which represented 59.5% of total sales, were up 30.5% for January. Footwear sales declined 8% while accessories fell 18.5%.
DSW Inc. reported comps decreased 7.2% for January versus a decrease of 1.7% for the year ago period. Net sales for the quarter ended January 31 increased 4.7% to $348.2 million.
