Carhartt Inc. announced it will convert operations at its Galesburg, IL, sewing plant to a distribution facility. This will result in the loss of 33 jobs, effective Dec. 31. The plant primarily manufactures a couple of styles of cotton canvas jackets.

“The end of a 40-year, globally-enforced apparel quota system and the passing of free trade agreements between the United States and other nations allow additional imports from overseas and significantly change our business. We are converting the Galesburg facility as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring we have the most efficient mix of domestic and international manufacturing and processing facilities,” Phil Edlin, Carhartt's vice president of manufacturing, said in a statement.
