Kokatat, the paddlewear and accessories company, will sponsor the upcoming Northern Lights expedition across Greenland.
Northern Lights Expeditions seek to establish links between children of isolated indigenous communities of the Arctic and children of the United Kingdom. The expedition will educate children about climate change and environmental awareness through joint scientific and social projects.
Equipped with Kokatat GORE-TEX® Expedition Dry Suits and Ronin Pro Life Jackets, Richard Smith and Craig Mathieson will kayak between remote Inuit settlements of Eastern Greenland to forge links with Scottish schools. Smith and Mathieson will deliver donated laptops to link Inuit children with Scottish projects exploring climate change, cultural differences, and differences in way of life and values.
Northern Lights will commence July 30th and finish at the end of August 2009. The expedition is divided into three phases: phase one is the Inuit settlement/Scotland link while phases two and three will concentrate on exchange visits between Scottish primary school children and Inuit youth. This phase of the expedition will travel via dogsled across sea ice in early 2010, where the Scottish children will learn firsthand the Inuit way of life.
