City Sports moved its corporate headquarters from Wilmington, MA, to Boston’s North End. The new City Sports office is located at 77 North Washington Street. The company’s distribution center will remain in Wilmington, and the company plans to open another store in New York City in early 2009.

“Our move demonstrates City Sports reenergized commitment to delivering the best experience to our target segment, the city athlete,” said Jeff Connor, president of City Sports. “Historically our headquarters were always in the city, and were thrilled to be back.”

City Sports Boston/Cambridge locations include Back Bay, Downtown Crossing, Boston University, Harvard Square, and Porter Square.

The company, which was acquired by Highland Capital in March 2008, is also setting the stage for expansion.

Mike Kennedy, CEO of City Sports notes, “Since Highland Capital’s infusion of capital, we have set an aggressive course for opening new stores and growing the City Sports brand. Last week we opened in Bethesda, MD — our fifteenth store — and we will be opening another new location on 48th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan in the first quarter of 2009. We will continue to look at other opportunities and cities for new locations throughout 2009 and beyond.”

City Sports also noted that it had receive several accolades in the sports retail industry. In 2008 Boston Magazine recognized City Sports as a Best of Boston winner for Best Sporting Goods Store for the fifth year in a row and Best Athletic Wear for the first year. Baltimore Magazine also awarded City Sports with 2008 Best Urban Sporting Goods Store.

Last week, City Sports opened a store in suburban Washington, D.C., the 15th store in the chain. The new City Sports store is located at 7121 Arlington Road, Bethesda, MD. Founded in 1983, the retailer now operates stores in metropolitan locations in Boston, Providence, New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore and Atlanta as well as online.
