The Western States 100 Endurance Run, widely considered one of the premiere ultra marathons in the country, released its full list of 2017 lottery entrants.
A total of 4,260 entrants submitted applications for a total of 10,891 tickets (as of November 21, 2016). The ticket count is more than double the number of runners who entered since lottery applicants who failed to gain entry in a prior years receive additional chances.
Of those who submitted applications, 2,481 of the total tickets were submitted singularly, while 995 entrants submitted two tickets (totaling 1,990 tickets), 391 entrants submitted three tickets, 251 entrants submitted four tickets, 251 submitted eight tickets, 110 entrants submitted 16, 30 submitted 32 and lastly, two entrants submitted 64 tickets each … meaning they’ve been passed aside from the lottery for seven years.
According to Western States, the number of entrants in the 2015 hat was 2,566, with a total ticket count of 6,601. Based on an expected draw of 270 and using a monte carlo simulation, the probability of being selected with a single name in the hat was 4.7 percent.
The 2017 drawing takes place December 3, 2016. The race takes place in Squaw Valley, CA, during the last weekend of June 2017.
