Visits to Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) resorts in January and February were down 4% versus the same period in 2009, according to figures released by the trade group, which represents 22 ski areas.

CSCUSA President Melanie Mills blamed the decline largely on dry snow conditions during some important mid-season weeks in January. Visits picked up in February due to increased snow and to increased deals offered by resorts, but not enough to make up for the January downturn, she said.

For the season to date, skier visits are down 2% at CSCUSA resorts, Mills.

Mills noted that to make up for the shortfall, some resorts are extending their seasons beyond the scheduled closing dates, while others are extending their operating hours over the next month or so.
