Colorado: Alien Cams

After a series of posts on Rockclimbing.com
reminiscent of the Kryptonite-Bic fiasco, Colorado
Custom Hardware completed an investigation
and extensive testing of the company’s
sole product, the Alien. CCH was able to identify
and isolate safety issues concerning the
brazing on CCH Alien cams.

Reportedly, there was an issue with one of
CCH’s subcontractors and certain cams failed
in the field even though the forces exerted
were likely below the stated strength on the
cam. The units with this issue are marked
with a small center punch dimple at the base
of the round ball where the axle goes through
the cable eye. Although few failures have
been reported, CCH recommends immediately
discontinuing the use of any Alien cams with
this mark. The company is issuing a full recall
of these cams. Consumers and retailers return
them to CCH for a free replacement.
