The US Senate has confirmed Inez Tenenbaum as chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). President Barack Obama nominated Tenenbaum, South Carolina's former state superintendent of education, for the post in May.
The appointment has been welcomed by industry group the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA).
“We can now begin the process of working together to overcome the serious hurdles the US apparel and footwear industry has encountered because of the recently enacted CPSIA,” said AAFA president and CEO Kevin Burke.
“By issuing clear and comprehensive guidance to manufacturers and retailers, allowing common-sense exemptions, and working closely with Congress to implement needed changes, the CPSC can create a predictable regulatory framework under which US apparel and footwear producers can continue making safe products for our children,” he added.
