Suunto was named the official timer and heart rate monitor of XTERRA, the world’s largest off-road multi-sport series. The two companies have also agreed to use the Suunto X9i (the world’s smallest and lightest GPS unit) at select XTERRA events to map courses and create three-dimensional simulated flyovers for viewing on the XTERRA and Suunto Web sites. Both companies say the partnership is an ideal fit, pairing advanced heart rate monitors and outdoor instruments with adventure-minded athletes.

“The XTERRA is an extraordinary event that puts extraordinary demands on participants’ equipment,” says XTERRA creator and CEO Tom Kiely “Suunto has an unmatched reputation among outdoor professionals who depend on their gear, and I believe Suunto technology will add a new dimension to upcoming XTERRA races.”

In addition to becoming the official timer of XTERRA, Suunto will equip eight Suunto XTERRA Ambassadors with Suunto t6 heart rate monitors and Suunto Foot and Bike PODs. On its end, XTERRA will offer select Suunto wristop computers as official XTERRA Gear at race expos and through the organization’s Web site. XTERRA will also award Suunto heart rate monitors to top finishers at high-profile races.

“From heart-rate monitoring to route-finding, everything Suunto excels in will be put to use in XTERRA races,” explains Suunto Sports Development Manager Christie Watts. “XTERRA events will also give Suunto a great opportunity to work with adventure racers at all levels, from newcomer through elite.”
