Recreational Equipment announced plans to open a store in Plano, Texas, in May 2005, at the northeast corner of Preston Road and Park Boulevard in Preston Towne Crossing.
The 27,000 square-foot store will be about 11 miles northeast of the REI store in Farmers Branch, Texas, which opened in 1993. Both communities are part of the Dallas market area, which has 29,000 active REI members.

“The Dallas area has a growing outdoor recreation community,” said REI Vice President of Real Estate Jerry Chevassus. “Plano is the home town of Lance Armstrong, so road biking is very popular. The city also maintains many walking and mountain biking trails, including an 11-mile section of the Chisholm Trail.”

The new store will provide REI’s full line of outdoor gear and clothing for hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, paddling and winter sports and all the top outdoor brands including REI’s own gear and apparel.

A portion of REI’s profits is set aside each year for support of outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship causes. REI currently operates 76 stores in 24 states, two online stores-REI.com and REI-OUTLET.com-and an adventure travel company, REI Adventures.
