REI has sparked a local firestorm against the Texas Department of Transportation. The retailer recently won an eminent domain lawsuit concerning Texas Katy Freeway expansion project that forced REI to relocate after part of its parking lot was taken away. TXDOT offered REI roughly $3 million for the property, but this was challenged in court and REI was awarded $5 million. Since the award, attorneys representing more than fifty additional companies in similar situations have said they will file suit as well.
