Outdoor Industry Association  (OIA) launched on Aug. 7 the Future Leadership Academy, a nine-month program dedicated to preparing and uniting the future leadership of the outdoor industry.

In its pilot year, the Academy will help prepare 20 outstanding and committed individuals to assume outdoor industry leadership positions in the years ahead. These individuals will be given personal and professional growth and development opportunities that include education on important industry issues, leadership training and mentoring from industry veterans.

“We are investing in our collective future by educating and empowering emerging leaders with the knowledge, skills and training needed to guide our industry, brands and retail businesses,” said Amy Roberts, executive director of Outdoor Industry Association. “Standing on the shoulders of those who created this industry, young leaders will connect with the rich legacy they are inheriting while preparing to lead the outdoor industry of the future.”

The Future Leadership Academy is being developed in partnership with the Futurist Project, an existing initiative of young innovators and leaders in the industry who gather twice a year to facilitate thoughtful conversation and community building. Building on these gatherings, the Future Leadership Academy will also include an educational curriculum that includes personal leadership growth and immersion on important industry issues. The programming includes online education and in-person experiences at a spring retreat OIA Rendezvous and mentoring opportunities by industry sages and luminaries.

“Young leaders in the outdoor industry are hungry for opportunities to be mentored, to connect and learn from our peers, and to further define our role in an evolving industry, ” said Deanna Lloyd Patagonia recruiting manager and Future Leadership Academy advisory council member. The Future Leadership Academy allows us to continue creating community that fosters learning, innovation and leadership.”

Educational tracks offered in the program include outdoor industry-focused learning about community leadership, supply chain responsibility, corporate responsibility, market and consumer insight research as well as personal and professional growth and development. The Future Leadership Academy will be accepting applications at the end of August and will consider individuals who are director level and below with a minimum of three years of experience in the industry and who demonstrate a passion, leadership and commitment to the outdoor industry.
