Nike has made Nike Training Club (NTC) permanently free after waiving the app’s premium fee in April for a limited time to help people stay active in their homes while quarantining due to COVID-19.

“NTC Premium Will Remain Free,” Nike wrote on the app’s microsite. “Keeping healthy and active with your fellow teammates remains one of the most important things for all of us. That’s why all of the NTC Premium programs, workouts, and expert tips that our community has come to love will stay free for all Nike Members, for good.”

Initially in waiving the fee in mid-April, Nike wrote, “We’re evolving as the world is evolving and we want you to stay healthy and active. Enjoy on-demand class-style workouts, programs, and expert tips on nutrition, sleep, and more with free access to NTC Premium to all Nike Members until further notice.”

The subscription-based service includes studio-style workouts, training programs and tips from the athletic giant’s master trainers. To mark making the app accessible for free, Nike launched a digital campaign. The ad released across social media read, “If you ever dreamed of playing for millions around the world, now is your chance,. Play inside, play for the world.”

On its fourth-quarter conference call on June 25, John Donahoe, Nike’s president and CEO, said workouts on the Nike Training Club app more than tripled in the quarter peaking in April at nearly 5 million workouts per week during the month. Nike officials also said the company would further accelerate its digital push while noting that digital has been critical to engaging consumers amid lockdowns. Donahoe said of the quarter, “Digital grew nearly 100 percent with continued brand momentum and significant new member acquisition and engagement across the Nike Training Club and the Nike Running Club apps with active new member growth of over 200 percent and more than 18 million workouts logged in the quarter.”
