The newly-created Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, located approximately 150 miles off the Massachusetts coast and covering 4,913 square miles, will differentiate public use from commercial extraction of marine resources by allowing recreational fishing.
The National Monument contains deep sea corals and other marine habitats. The area includes popular offshore fishing spots for anglers who target billfish, tuna and mahi mahi near the ocean surface. It’s the third marine monument created or expanded by the current administration. The previous two decisions, which designated areas near Hawaii and remote Pacific islands, also allowed for recreational fishing.
