Hanesbrands Inc., the parent of Champion, has eliminated 46 hourly
employeesat its service center in Martinsville, VA. Spokesman Matt Hall
told The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area that the company
had been running a shorter schedule at the center for about a month.
Prior to the job reductions, the plant had about 300 employees.
In January, Hanesbrands said that it was eliminating 310 jobs and closing a
sock-knitting plant in Barnwell, S.C., by the end of April as part of
its strategy of consolidating into fewer, larger plants outside of the
United States.
Since spinning off from Sara Lee Corp. in September 2006, Hanesbrands
has closed — or is closing — at least 30 plants worldwide.
