September Retail Sales Increased 3 Percent

Retail sales in September increased 0.4 percent over August on a seasonally adjusted basis and were up 3 percent year-over-year unadjusted, according to calculations released by the National Retail Federation. Sporting goods stores sales were down 6.3 percent unadjusted year-over-year and up 0.7 percent seasonally adjusted from August.

Fitness Takes A Hit With Sears Bankruptcy

In a blow to a number of fitness equipment suppliers, Sears, as expected, on Monday filed for bankruptcy protection. One fitness company, Icon Health And Fitness Inc., landed on Sears’ list of the top-20 unsecured creditors, owed $12.1 million.

Sears Holdings, the parent of Sears and Kmart, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy early Monday morning after a long battle to stay afloat amid steep declines in sales and customer traffic. As part of the bankruptcy, Sears will shutter 142 stores toward the end of the year.

Report: Sears May Liquidate Before Holiday Selling

A bankruptcy filing by Sears Holdings, the parent of Sears and Kmart, is expected as soon as Monday when a major debt payment comes due. But sources told the Wall Street Journal that some of the company’s major lenders are pushing for an outright liquidation to avoid any bankruptcy restructuring phase. A liquidation would waylay the fitness equipment category and add promotional pressures to holiday selling.

Asics announced the opening of an urban large-scale low oxygen training center in September 2019. The training center will be housed within a multi-purpose facility in Tokyo’s futuristic Toyosu district and will be approximately 5,000 square meters and occupy the second and third floors of the facility.
