Outdoor instrument maker Highgear appointed Jay Curwen as VP of sales, effective immediately.

“We are extremely excited to have Jay on board,” says Highgear founder and President Mike Hosey. “He is extremely well-respected in our industry both as a successful athlete and accomplished businessman. Jay will be a tremendous asset to Highgear as well as our dealer base, I am confident our customers will thoroughly enjoy working with him.”

Curwen’s overflowing athletic zeal and extreme dedication has led him to accomplish several notable feats giving him recognition as a world class athlete. He is an accomplished runner, adventure racer and IronMan triathlete who has received sponsorships from Nike and Asics.  In his first ever Adventure Race, Curwen received a notable podium finish at the Mild Seven race in China.  As a long time member of the Team LiteSpeed, Curwen served as their navigator, leading the team to a national championship in 2002.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Curwen is a seasoned professional, working with several industry powerhouses. He began his career in retail for the renowned southeast climbing shop, Black Dome, where he stayed for eleven years before joining The North Face. At TNF, Curwen worked as the southeast sales manager for five years. Eventually he joined Patagonia as a southeastern territory rep before becoming their head territory rep. After a six year stint with Patagonia, returned to Black Dome to honor a friend’s request.

“Highgear is a company with huge potential both in the core outdoor altimeter market and within the general instrument market,” said Curwen. “I am anxious and eager to reconnect with old friends and meet new contacts at OR as I begin to develop long-term, strategic programs that are mutually beneficial for all.”

Highgear will host a welcoming reception for Curwen at the Outdoor Retailer show on August the 8th from 4-6 pm at their booth.  All are invited to stop by 36157 to enjoy their first cold one of the show and to meet Curwen.
