Clif Bar Inc. has received a Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for demonstrating superior environmental stewardship through its purchase of green power. The company purchased enough energy credits from renewable sources to offset the greenhouse gas emissions from its energy use in 2002.

Clif Bar Inc. was one of just 19 organizations nationwide to
receive the award from the EPA during the National Green Power
Marketing Conference in Chicago.

“We're very honored to be recognized for our efforts in green
power,” said Gary Erickson, Clif Bar Inc. owner and CEO. “Energy from
renewable resources contributes to public health and the fight against
global warming.”

Through a partnership with NativeEnergy, Clif Bar Inc. purchased
renewable energy credits to help finance construction of the first
large-scale, Native American-owned wind turbine. Wind farms displace
electricity derived from fossil fuels that cause global warming,
creating reductions in pollutants and greenhouse gases. The energy
credits purchased by Clif Bar Inc. neutralized about 2,000 tons of
carbon dioxide — equivalent to taking 250 SUVs off the road for a
year.

In addition to its partnership with NativeEnergy, Clif Bar Inc.
also fights global warming through numerous environmental programs,
including the use of recycled packaging and office products, as well
as organic ingredients in its energy and nutrition bars.

The EPA's Green Power Leadership Awards are part of the
recognition offered through the Green Power Partnership, a voluntary
program working to standardize green power purchasing as part of best
practice environmental management. The program has over 80 partners –
including Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade
associations and universities.
