Cairn, the Bend, OR-based outdoor gear subscription box company, has hired Backbone Media, a firm that has offices in Carbondale and Denver, CO, to manage the company’s communications strategy and public relations.
Founded by former aerospace engineer Rob Little and Apple veteran Jared Peterson, Cairn launched in 2013; the company delivers outdoor products to thousands of subscribers. In addition to serving as a discovery vehicle for consumers, Cairn provides its brand partners with demographic and product review data to support new product launches.
“Cairn is thrilled to partner with Backbone Media,” said Cairn co-founder Jared Peterson. “The Backbone name in the outdoor industry is synonymous with authentic, innovative, impactful brands, and we are excited to partner with them in telling the Cairn story.”
Subscribers choose from a monthly Cairn box, featuring up to six products at a value of $35 to $50, or a premium quarterly Obsidian box, including five to 10 products at a value of more than $300. The contents of each box are curated for subscribers, based on seasonal relevance, sizes and recreation preferences.
In February 2018, Cairn launched the company’s Gear Up, Give Back program, making it easy for customers to ship back and donate their used gear, which is then repaired and sold by Bend-based The Gear Fix, with net proceeds benefiting The Conservation Alliance.
“The partnership with Cairn is exciting because of the potential they have as a brand discovery vehicle, providing syndicated reviews and data to brands as they go to market,” said Backbone founder and partner, Penn Newhard. “Cairn is well-positioned to assist brands in in multiple ways, as modern retail continues to evolve.”
