The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. announced total sales for the four weeks ended
August 4, decreased 7.6% to $194.3 million compared to $210.3 million
for the prior year period. Bon-Ton and Carson's combined comparable
store sales for the four weeks decreased 7.6%.
Carson's comparable store sales decreased 1.5% and Bon-Ton comparable
store sales decreased 17.3% compared to the prior year period.
Tony Buccina, Vice Chairman and President – Merchandising, commented,
“July sales results were below expectations reflecting the continued
slowdown in consumer traffic. In addition, Bon-Ton July comparable
store sales is being compared to the second largest month of the
assortment liquidation sales in the Bon-Ton stores in the prior year.
We estimate the impact of the liquidation sales in July 2006 was
approximately $6.9 million, constituting approximately 3.3% of the
combined comparable store sales decrease in July 2007. Excluding the
impact of the liquidation sales, the combined comparable store sales
decreased approximately 4.3%.”
Mr. Buccina continued, “Categories of merchandise which performed well
included children's, juniors, cosmetics and better missy sportswear.
The weakest performing areas were home and furniture. Our seasonal
spring/summer inventories are priced aggressively, making room for our
new assortments. We experienced sales pick up in the last week of the
month as we kicked off our semi-annual home and furniture sale as well
as our back-to-school promotion in children's and juniors. We are
encouraged by our customer's response to initial fall offerings in both
the Bon-Ton and Carson's stores.”
For the second quarter of fiscal 2007, total sales decreased 5.1% to
$708.6 million compared to $746.8 million for the prior year period.
Bon-Ton and Carson's combined comparable stores sales decreased 5.0%.
Year-to-date total sales increased 10.5% to $1,446.2 million compared
to $1,308.5 million for the same period last year. For informational
purposes only, year-to-date Carson's comparable store sales decreased
