James H. Baireuther, vice chairman and chief administrative officer, commented, “Although the sales of apparel continued to improve, July sales, in aggregate, were disappointing. Home remains the weakest category. Product categories which performed well were ladies' apparel, including special sizes, men's, fashion accessories, shoes and boy's and girl's. Customer response to our early fall deliveries has been favorable. As we continue to transition into fall with fresh, new assortments, we are focused on the timely liquidation of spring and summer goods.”

Mr. Baireuther continued, “While our sales performance in the second quarter was below expectations, we are reaffirming our earnings guidance for fiscal 2005 of $1.70 to $1.85 per share.”
