BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. saw sales for June 2010 increase by 7.9% to $1.08 billion, from $1.00 billion in June 2009. Comparable club sales for June 2010 increased by 3.8%, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of 0.6%. Excluding gasoline, merchandise comparable club sales increased by 3.2%.



For June 2009, the Company reported a comparable club sales decrease of 7.5%, including a negative impact from gasoline sales of 10.2%. Excluding gasoline, merchandise comparable club sales increased by 2.7%.


The Company provided the following additional information regarding comparable club sales for June 2010:



  • Sales increased in all five weeks.

  • Sales increased in all regions with the largest increase in the Southeast and the smallest increase in the Mid-Atlantic.

  • Excluding sales of gasoline, traffic increased by approximately 5% versus last year and the average transaction amount decreased by approximately 2%.

  • Sales of food increased by approximately 4% and general merchandise sales increased by approximately 1%.

  • Departments with the strongest sales increases compared to last year included air conditioners, cigarettes, dairy, juices, meat, milk, prepared foods, produce, seasonal, toys and water. Weaker departments versus last year included coffee, computers, paper products, prerecorded video and televisions.
