Birkenstock, the German footwear brand and inventor of the footbed, has opened a concept store in Zhangyuan, Shanghai. Previously introduced as a pop-up, the store has a permanent home within one of Shanghai’s cultural landmarks.

Dating back to 1882, Zhangyuan, Shanghai, is known for its preserved shikumen lane houses and a blend of Eastern and Western influences. The newly restored district integrates its historical legacy with contemporary urban life, “making it the ideal setting for Brikensotck’s permanent concept store,” said the company in a media release.

The store’s contemporary minimalist design merges with heritage details, featuring muted, light tones and natural materials. Shanghainese influences are present with locally crafted benches, floor lamps, and armchairs. Art Deco inspirations were woven into the display fixtures, while traditional roof tiles are in the 1774 display rack. An art installation made from layered transparent silk with hand-embroidered Chinese motifs highlights the Birkenstock footbed.

The Zhangyuan store showcases the Birkenstock collection and its 1774 product line. The store will debut the brand’s Boro Collection, inspired by the traditional Japanese art of textile mending and created in collaboration with Jesse Leyva.

Birkenstock “will deepen its engagement with local communities, creating experiences that bring its philosophy of ‘Naturgewolltes Gehen’ (walking as nature intended) to life for consumers in China and beyond,” continued the company in the release.

Birkenstock has partnered with Pure Yoga to offer members an in-store exclusive foot health experience, “highlighting the connection between movement and well-being.” From March 27 to April 9, this limited-time initiative invites participants to explore foot yoga sessions incorporating the brand’s Cork Tool Kit—a three-piece set designed for targeted foot exercises to relieve muscle tension, promote movement and enhance overall foot health.
