SportsOneSource mourns the loss of a family member. Ben Powell, son of Matt Powell, a long-time sporting goods industry analyst and a founding partner of this newsletter, succumbed to injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Murdo, S.D. He was 21 years young. Ben, born July 2, 1985 in Boston, Mass., passed away on Friday in Rapid City, S.D.

Ben graduated Princeton High School in 2003.  He traveled for a year and a half after high school, working on a horse farm in Ireland, clearing trails in the Redwood forest and working at Arcosanti in Arizona.  He briefly attended Antioch College and returned to Arcosanti where he made the famous Soleri windbells and worked on the farm. Benjamin was a musician, avid reader, and a devotee of hard work and simple living.  He was on his way to Maine to begin a career as an organic farmer when he died.

He is survived by his parents, Susan and Matt Powell, and brother Henry, all of Princeton, as well as loving friend and companion, Sarah Kurzhals, of Clinton Township, Mich. He is also survived by grandmother, Ruby Powell, of Kettering Ohio, and grandparents Greer and Betsy McBratney of South Dartmouth, Mass., as well as a large number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving friends.

His free spirit will missed by all.
