Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods have all taken down Washington Redskins merchandise from their websites amid renewed calls for the NFL team to change its name.
The move comes as the team on July 3 announced that it planned to reevaluate the use of the name that some consider offensive to Native Americans.
Walmart on a tweet on July 3 said it was “discontinuing the sale of items that reference the team’s name and logo.”
As reported, Nike, the NFL’s official gameday uniform supplier, had taken down Washington Redskin’s apparel from its website as well.
Nike said in a statement on July 3 that it had “been talking to the NFL and sharing our concerns regarding the name of the Washington team. We are pleased to see the team taking a first step towards change,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Nike, FedEx and PepsiCo all reportedly have received a letter recently from investors asking that it sever ties with the Washington Redskins unless the team changes its name.
