Thalmic Labs, a wearable tech company led by mechatronics engineers Stephen Lake, Matthew Bailey and Aaron Grant, closed $120 million in Series B funding from technology giants Intel Capital and The Amazon Alexa Fund, along with Fidelity Investments Canada and participation from existing investors including Spark Capital.
“This new investment will help us realize our vision for the next era of computing, where the lines between humans and digital technology become increasingly blurred,” said Co-founder Lake.
In 2012, Thalmic created its first Myo armband, which made advances in gesture recognition, and now researchers are using the Myo armband to train amputees on how to use their prosthetic limb. The armband harnesses wearable gesture control technology into a motion control device that lets the user take control of their phone, computer and more, touch-free.
Lake teased that there are already new products in the pipeline for Thalmic, and SGB wouldn’t be surprised if the company releases a co-branded fitness wearable in collaboration with one of its big investors.
