The North Face released an anthem for explorers everywhere featuring legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin and his thoughts on what drives humans to seek out the unknown. The two-minute piece, titled “The Explorer,” centers on the idea that humans are born with and will always have a desire to explore and is a companion edit to the brand’s newly released 30 second national ad campaign around exploration.
“We believe that exploration makes the world a better place and we want to inspire people everywhere to follow their curiosity and to explore,” said Aaron Carpenter, VP of global marketing at The North Face. “These segments incorporate imagery from The North Face global athlete team and expeditions around the globe, as well as what we feel are cultural representations of exploration throughout the world.
According to Dr. Aldrin, “People will always have a desire to explore what they haven’t seen, whether it’s above us, on the surface, or down in the depths of the ocean.”
“The Explorer” short features a myriad of footage of expeditions and exploration, including mountaineers ascending Mt. Everest and Mt. Meru, children playing outdoors, snowboarding in Antarctica and Amelia Earhart. The national TV ad also features The North Face global athlete team, who help the company test, inform and inspire products alongside local athletes and the outdoor lifestyle.
“The Explorer” is narrated by Dr. Aldrin and culminates with his famous quote from onboard Apollo 11 on July 24, 1969, “We feel that this stands as a symbol of the insatiable curiosity of all mankind to explore the unknown.”
The North Face will continue to highlight The North Face global athlete team and exploration through its content in 2014 and beyond.
