The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. announced total and comparable store sales for the four weeks ended February 1, 2003 increased 8.9% to $32.0 million compared to $29.4 million reported in the same period last year.
For the fourth quarter, total and comparable store sales decreased 1.7% to $241.3 million from $245.6 million reported in the comparable last year period. Year-to-date total and comparable store sales decreased 1.2% to $713.2 million from $721.8 million reported in the prior year.
James H. Baireuther, vice chairman and chief administrative officer, commented, “January comparable store sales exceeded our expectations. Timely markdowns on seasonal goods drove sales as did our “wear now” strategy, which supports our customer’s pattern of buying closer to need. A fresh assortment of new merchandise, including cold weather merchandise, gave our customers excellent choices during the month. Coats, accessories, men’s, dresses, home and women’s apparel posted increases above Company average for the month. Inventory levels remain on plan as we transition into spring merchandise.”
