A survey by RunRepeat.com of 5,055 global gym members between August 1-13 found that just 30.98 percent have returned to use a gym since the lockdown from COVID-19 occurred.

Of the respondents, 59.06 percent have canceled, or are considering canceling, their memberships (19.59 percent canceled, 40.11 percent considering).

The survey also found that consumer confidence in gyms has decreased since a March survey by RunRepeat.com, with 22.35 percent fewer members returning to their gyms than had expected to by now. In addition, 22.49 percent more respondents had already canceled, or considering canceling, their memberships than expected to in March.

Other findings in the survey:

  • Australia saw the greatest percentage of members returning with 52.80 percent having come back. The U.S. return rate was 29.28 percent.
  • The UK had the highest gym membership cancellation rate (21.76 percent) while Australia had the lowest (15.20 percent). The U.S. was at 20.56 percent.
  • In the U.S., states with the five highest return rates of gym members were Tennessee (52.11 percent); Ohio (48.86 percent); Florida (45.26 percent); Colorado (57.50 percent); and Texas (59.12 percent).
  • States with the five lowest return rates of gym members included Maryland (27.17 percent); Washington (26.00 percent); California (18.01 percent); Arizona (11.27 percent); and Michigan (10.34 percent).
