During 'Skin Cancer Awareness Month' in May 2011, Sports Authority partnered with the Melanoma Research Alliance to collect donations at all check-out locations to raise $189,000.

With the approximate 10.8 million customers that shopped at Sports Authority during the month of May Sports Authority was able to collect $189,191 in gross sales donations received from generous customers that then went to the Melanoma Research Alliance to help in their fight against skin cancer and melanoma awareness education.

“I am so proud that our customers feel the same compassion for skin cancer awareness that we do as a corporation,” said Jeff Schumacher, EVP and Chief Marketing Officer of Sports Authority. “We realize that the products we provide our customers encourage them to go outside and be active and as a socially responsible corporation we want to make sure that they are being safe in the sun. With this partnership we were able to not only help raise money for the MRA but we were also able to leverage in-store opportunities to create awareness around skin cancer education for our employees and customers alike.”

“No one individual or organization can defeat melanoma alone. That is why MRA is so pleased to have the generous support of The Sports Authority and a growing list of allies in the fight against melanoma to amplify our message and garner the resources necessary to advance our mission,” said Wendy K.D. Selig, president and CEO of MRA. “The response of the public to this year’s campaign has been extraordinary and will help fuel the pace of scientific discovery in finding cures and improving treatments for melanoma.”
