Four time world soccer player of the year Lionel Messi has signed a three year contract with Dutch Space Scooter to help design and promote a special edition of the scooter under his own brand.

Dutch company and brand owner Easy2 Company B.V. will license globally Space Scooter under Messi’s brand. The Space Scooter, shown with Messi to the right,  is driven by moving the tray up and down, causing a chain to power the rear wheel. The patented design results in a ride some have likened to walking in space, hence the name Space Scooter.

The scooter’s patented design results in a new and unique way of moving that has caused many children and young adults to ditch their bikes.

Eager to find a celebrity who could connect the themes of children, outdoor play and exercise, Space Scooter thought of Messi.

“He is loved all over the world, sympathetic, athletic and is a great example for many children when it comes to what you can accomplish in your life, if only you believe in yourself,” said Easy2 Company Managing Director Joost Blom.

Connecting Messi to his brand seemed an impossible task, but during their first meeting Blom felt a positive vibe with the superstar.

“He immediately liked the Space Scooter,” Blom said. “Until now he did nothing with the promotion of toys and kids, so it was an ideal cooperation for both sides. Messi and his nephews are already riding the scooters themselves.”

Messi and Easy2 Company signed a contract for the development and promotion of the Messi Space Scooter, which will be launched during the World Cup Football in June. Under the agreement, the 'Messi' Scooter will be sold at a future Messi web store. In return, the Dutch company is handing out free scooters in districts and projects supported by the Leo Messi Foundation.

“Being one of the few in the world which are allowed to work together with Lionel Messi is a milestone for our company,” said Blom.
