The Dyrt, an app for camping, found that 40 percent of the people who went camping for the first time in 2021 identified as Black, Indigenous and People of Color, up from 23 percent in 2018, representing a two-thirds increase in four years according to its 2022 Camping Report*.
The 2022 Report found that 8.3 million people went camping in the U.S. for the first time in 2021. In total, one in five Americans camped last year.
*The report is based on a random sample of The Dyrt users and two separate third-party surveys. The Dyrt also interviewed respondents, including members, who camped for the first time in 2021.
