Recreational Equipment, Inc. has appointed Janet Hopkins and Tim Spangler to the company's recently created retail
store regional vice president positions. Hopkins and Spangler, both of whom currently serve as members of REI's retail leadership team, will lead retail store operations including oversight of store-based hiring, merchandising and marketing efforts for the company's Midwest/East and Western regions respectively.

Hopkins, who joined REI's staff in 1993, began as a
retail store supervisor and later served as a store
manager at REI's Paradise Valley, Ariz. and Berkeley,
Calif. stores before serving in her most recent position
as the retail director of the company's Northern
California district. In her new position as regional vice
president, Hopkins will be based in Boston.

Prior to joining REI, Hopkins worked as a regional sales
manager for Penton Publishing, an administrative
analyst at UCLA, assistant store manager for Eddie
Bauer, Inc. and is a former professional golfer. In her
spare time, she enjoys mountain biking, skiing, hiking
and running.

Spangler was hired by REI in 1993 as a phone sales
representative, and later worked in several of REI's
retail stores, including serving as manager of the
Spokane REI. He also served as the manager of REI's
former Tokyo flagship store, before becoming director of
retail operations in 2001. In his new position as regional
vice president, Spangler will be based in Denver.

Prior to joining REI, Spangler worked as an associate
with Trade and Development Consortium in Seattle, and
instructor with the Institute for Pacific Rim Studies in
Lacey, Wash., and interned with the American Institute
in Taiwan. In his spare time, he enjoys backpacking,
rock climbing, skiing and travel.
