REI Bulking up in New York City Region

REI plans to open stores in Yonkers, N.Y., Carle Place, N.Y. and Paramus, N.J. in the spring of 2011, increasing to five the number of stores it has in the New York City metropolitan area and setting the stage for more head-on competition with Eastern Mountain Sports.

The new stores follow the retail co-op’s previously announced plan to convert the historic Puck Building in Manhattan into a 38,000-square-foot flagship store that will open next fall.

The new 25,300-square-foot REI in Yonkers, N.Y. will be located off of I-87 in Westchester County at Ridge Hill. The 25,400-square-foot store in Carle Place, N.Y. will be located at The Country Glen Center at the intersection of Glen Cove Road and Old Country Road. The store in Paramus, N.J. will be a 24,100-square-foot store and located at Bergen Town Center on Route 4.

REI has stepped up its expansion in the east since opening a 525,000-square foot distribution center in Bedford, PA in late 2007.  The company's current Tri-State locations include stores in East Hanover, NJ. and Norwalk, CT, which opened on Oct. 8.

REI now operates 11 stores from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts and is also filling in the Mid-Atlantic territory, where it will open its 114th store Nov. 12 in Columbia, MD. The nation’s largest retail co-op, REI reported sales of $1.46 billion in 2009 and 3.9 million active members.

Eastern Mountain Sports, which is based in Peterborough, NH, operates 64 stores from the Virginia to Maine. The company is in the midst of upgrading its stores to a larger, 15,000-square-foot format. It moved its Manhattan store to an 18,000-square-foot space in SoHo in spring 2009.

Hiring for each new store will occur approximately three months prior to the openings. Each store will hire approximately 65 employees.
