The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., announced a voluntary recall of about 14,00 Specialized 2009 Model Bicycles. The handlebars can break, posing a fall hazard to the rider.

Specialized, of Morgan Hill, Calif, has received two reports of the handlebar breaking during use, one of which caused a rider to suffer head trauma which resulted in unconsciousness and a puncture wound to the arm.

The items were sold to uthorized dealers nationwide from June 2008 through February 2009 for between $640 and $1,050.

This recall involves HL handlebars on the following 2009 Specialized bicycles: Cross Trail Comp, Myka HT Comp, Myka HT Elite, Rockhopper, Rockhopper Comp and Rockhopper Comp 29. The model number of the HL handlebar is ALR-13 NTFOV and is located underneath the right hand grip of the handlebar.

A statement advises consumers stop riding these bicycles and contact a Specialized dealer for a free replacement handlebar.
