Gerber is recalling 80,000 sheaths shipped with its Bear Grylls Parang machetes in the United States and Canada, because they can fray during normal use and expose the user to a laceration hazard.

The hazard can occur if the machetes cuts through the stitching of the sheaths as its blade is being removed or put into the sheath. Gerber has received eight reports of lacerations to the user’s hands or fingers, including three injuries that required stitches.

The sheaths were sold by sporting goods stores nationwide and online from February 2012 through February 2013 for about $43 for the machete and sheath set, and $349 for the Survival Kit.

In August, 2012, Gerber recalled nearly 119,000 of the machetes because of a weakness in their construction that could cause the blade to break during use and pose a laceration hazard.
