Mammut Sports Group Inc., of Williston, Vt. has recalled 144 units of its RescYou crevasse rescue device because the small toothed cam blocking the pull-cord may not lock securely causing reduced efficiency and possibly delaying a rescue.

While Mammut has received no reports of such incident or any injuries, the Swiss company said the problem could result in injury or death to the fallen climber. The recall involves 70 units in the US and 77 units in Canada.

The RescYou is used for ski mountaineering and mountain climbing to allow the user to haul a climber who has fallen into a crevasse back to the surface of a glacier. The RescYou consists of two toothed-cam rope-grabs connected by a length of cord threaded through pulleys to achieve a mechanical advantage hauling system. Only batch numbers 12/12 and 3/13 are included in this recall. The batch number is etched into the side of the Blue rope grab. Batch numbers other than 12/12 and 3/13 are not included in this recall.

The devices were manufactured by Mammmut Sports Group AG in Taiwan and sold by specialty outdoor stores in the United States and Canada after June, 2013 for approximately $125.
