PrAna is making strides toward working against climate change by making a 3,000,000 KW Hours commitment to renewable energy in the form of wind power. PrAna will launch its initiative this fall starting with 100 of its retailers, with the intention of bringing on board all prAna dealers. The prAna Natural Power Initiative will offset energy with the purchase of Green-e certified tradable renewable energy certificates supplied by 3 Phases Energy Services. Retailers simply need to apply for the program through prAna and there is no need to switch utility services and there is no rate change. The wind power will be contributed through prAna’s deal with 3 Phases.

“We have already set up our facility with wind power, and we will be offsetting the home power of all of our full-time employees. This was a way to be more inclusive with our dealers,” said Beaver Theodosakis, founder and owner of prAna. “To this day, every time I recycle something instead of throwing it in the trash, I think of Patagonia. I thought that we should drive one initiative that prAna should be known for. prAna is an ancient Farsi word for breath, and wind power is that one that area we will own.”

PrAna's wind power initiative will prevent the release of 3,657,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – the equivalent of planting 494 acres of trees or removing 319 average passenger vehicles from U.S. roadways each year. prAna’s long-term goal is to have all of their sewing factories’ power usage offset by wind credits as well, and to eventually set up a consumer program.

Additionally, prAna's commitment will invest in the future of wind power, ensuring the formation of new wind farms and bolstering existing farms to create a wider base for future wind power production. Phase 3’s long term goal is to have 12% of the U.S. power grid based on wind power by the year 2012.

Wind power is a clean and renewable energy source that produces no greenhouse gas emissions or waste products. This energy will be integrated directly into the regional and national electric grid, thereby reducing the emissions from one of the planet’s largest pollutants, electrical energy generation.

Conventional power plants within the United States are responsible for roughly two-thirds of the Earth's pollutants that result in acid rain; half of the world's nuclear waste; one-third of our global warming pollution; one-third of the air pollutants that are a chief cause of respiratory-related hospital admissions for children and senior citizens.

“This is by far the most rewarding program I have worked on at prAna,” said Theodosakis. “I had a very influential dealer teary-eyed at the show he was so happy we were doing this and he doesn’t need to do anything at all except sign up.”
