Charlotte, NC-based Phd Productions has launched a $50,000 crowdfunding campaign for its newest product – a macramé flying disc embedded with LEDs – on Kickstarter.

The company, which has been exhibiting its macramé Pocket Disc throwing discs at Outdoor Retailer in recent years, is seeking pledges totaling $50,000 to launch LunaDisc in time for the holidays. The LunaDisc is a 100% cotton, crocheted colorful flying disc with LED lights woven into the surface. Like the original Pocket Disc, the LunaDisc will be safe for play both indoors and outdoors and is fun for kids and adults.

The last day to pre-order the LunaDisc on Kickstarter is August 5. As of Monday, with 27 days to go, the company had raised nearly $16,000 from 164 backers.

In a video on the company's Kickstarter page, Phd Productions' Co-Founder Patrick Groft says the company now sources its discs from 400 Mayan craftswomen in Guatemala in a fair-trade sanctioned operation.

Phd Productions will be promoting both the Pocket Disc and LunaDisc at next weekend's (July 14-21) Disc Golf Pro-Am World Championship in Charlotte.

“We’re excited to expand our market with the new LunaDisc,” said Phd Productions Co-Founder Patrick Groft. “We think it will be a fun, hot toy this holiday season and a great gift for kids of all ages.”

Phd Productions, LLC, the creator of the Pocket Disc, is based in North Carolina. Pocket Discs can be purchased at a variety of retailers nationwide including LL Bean, Eastern Mountain Sports, Learning Express Toys, many independent Play-It-Again Sports and over 1,500 specialty toy, gift and outdoor retailers.
