Arthur Jones, the inventor of Nautilus training equipment in 1970,
recently passed away. Jones employed Nautilus shell-shaped cams to
achieve optimal exertion through a full range of motion in
single-station training equipment. He also pioneered high intensity
training techniques that were credited with expanding strength training
to the masses through quick and effective workouts.
Mr. Jones has not had any association with Nautilus since 1986, when he
sold his interest in the company and brand. The Nautilus brand was
purchased by Vancouver, Wash.-based Direct Focus, Inc. in 1999, which
adopted the brand as its corporate moniker in 2002 and is now known as
Nautilus, Inc.
