Nike Inc. will open a two-level, 22,000-square-feet store in downtown Detroit in spring 2016.

The opening of the store at 1261 Woodward Avenue was confirmed by Nike Inc. and the developers, Bedrock Real Estate Services.

Crain's reported in September that Nike had applied to the U.S. Green Building Council to certify a potential store in the area was eco-friendly.

The Detroit store is expected to be a “community store,” which supports the local community. On its website, Nike said of its community-store concept: “As part of
its Community Store model, Nike store employees and Nike’s retail
leadership support volunteerism and allocate volunteer hours to sport-
and non-sport-related efforts. Store employees, who are known as
'athletes,' will work with kids to drive early, positive experiences
with physical activity throughout the community.”

Community stores are also open in Portland, OR; New Orleans; Chicago; and Washington, D.C.
