The September 2021 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) decreased 17.3 percent in September against inflated demand a year ago tied to the pandemic.

The NSSF-adjusted figure of 1.35 million is compared to the September 2020 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1.63 million.

For comparison, the unadjusted September 2021 FBI NICS figure of 2,602,293 reflects an 8.9 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,857,953 in September 2020.

The September 2021 figures were the second strongest for the month on record, surpassed only by September 2020, when 1,632,918 background checks for a firearm sale were conducted.

The third quarter 2021 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 3,970,570 reflects a decrease of 23.1 percent compared to the 5,165,308 figure for third quarter 2020, making third quarter 2021 the second-highest on record.
