NICS Firearms Background Checks Up 6.5 Percent In January

The January 2023 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1.27 million is an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the January 2022 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1.19 million.

The January 2023 NSSF-unadjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) increased 3.1 percent to 2.61 million compared to the January 2022 NSSF-unadjusted NICS figure of 2.53 million.

January 2023 marks the 42nd month in a row that exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month.

In 2022, NSSF’s adjusted NICS checks declined 11 percent in 2022 to 16.43 million from 18.5 million in 2021 and was down 22 percent from 2020’s all-time high.
